The first full admissions cycle since the landmark Students for Fair Admissions Supreme Court decision has come to a close, and MARKETview has analyzed the data from 175+ partners to understand the impact across the enrollment landscape. While we work with each of our partners with diversity goals on a one-to-one basis to determine what matters most to achieve them, we’ve compiled four, key global insights to consider:
Key Insight #1: Diversity Has Increased Proportionally Over Last Two Cycles
From 2020 through 2022, the proportion of Students of Color enrolling remained relatively stable at around 30.7%. But in the last two cycles, we’ve seen consecutive increases in diversity, rising to 33.5% in 2023 and 34.4% in 2024. These changes are likely due to the demographic shift affecting the enrollment landscape and the implementation of successful diversity initiatives at several institutions.
Key Insight #2: Volume Gains in Diversity Did Not Lead to Increased Enrollment
While there was significant growth in both application and admit volume for Students of Color in the entering class of 2024, it did not end up translating into an enrollment increase. With White students, our partners saw a flattening of application volume, and a 3.3% decline in enrollment.
Key Insight #3: Public Schools Saw the Greatest Diversity Gains Throughout the Funnel
When we examined the Students of Color volume data within specific cohorts, we noticed a much larger lift in application and admit volume in the Public cohort. These institutions saw a 9.6% increase in enrollment, while the Private and Top 100 cohorts both had a slight decrease in enrollment.
Key Insight #4: Many East Coast Schools Faced Declines in Enrollment With Students of Color
MARKETview data showed year-over-year enrollment with Students of Color widely varied across different states. Overall, the east coast was the region that faced the largest declines.
